Oral Pathology Lab at the Dental School at Tel Aviv University Founded by Alpha Omega
On May 12, 2022, the newly renovated TAU Oral Pathology Lab was inaugurated following the annual Dental Advisory board meeting held during the Board of Governors Meeting at TAU. This year the meeting was attended by Alpha Omega members from Canada, the United States, the UK, France, and Israel.
A few years ago, we were informed that the Oral Pathology lab was in disrepair due to a lack of funds. TAU is the only dental school in Israel that trains Oral Pathologists, who play a vital role in the diagnoses of oral diseases including oral cancer. Each year the Montreal Alumni chapter of Alpha Omega honours an exemplary member of Israel Bonds.
Last year, the recipient of choice was Barry Dolman, who had served as President of the Ordre des Dentistes du Quebec. Barry was the only Jewish Anglophone ever to have been elected to that role. Barry had been involved in many aspects of organized dentistry as well as in the Jewish community. Before accepting the honour, Barry had insisted that we choose a worthy cause. Therefore, we undertook the renovation and equipping of the Oral Pathology lab.
Despite Covid, we were able to hold a fundraising event under the auspices of Alpha Omega Montreal, Israel Bonds, and Canadian Friends of Tel Aviv University, Quebec Region and raise an astonishing $250,000. Alpha Omega recognizes Ruth Remer Z”l, cousin of International Board of Director, Murray Miller, who was the impetus behind the renovation and made a sizeable contribution to the campaign.
Sadly, before we could complete the campaign, Barry z”l passed away. In another sad turn of events, Sam Israelovitch z”l, an outstanding member of the committee, past honored, and past Montreal President of Alpha Omega, tragically passed away as well. His wife, Sarah, and his family along with some fellow Alpha Omegans decided to honour his memory by funding the necessary equipment for the same lab.
We are very pleased to say that after nearly reaching our projected fundraising goal, the new facility is scheduled to open in the next few weeks to continue to carry out its most important role. The Montreal chapter along with all the Canadian chapters should be extremely proud of the impressive campaign they contributed to, both in the name of the men that were honoured, and in the name of
Tel Aviv University.
