Purim is the festival that commemorates the salvation of the Jewish People in ancient Persia from the evil Haman’s plan to annihilate all the Jews in a single day. As Alpha Omegans, our celebration of Purim reminds us of our values and our mission.
We are required to listen to the reading of the Megillah, which retells the story of Purim, in order to learn and recognize that there are those who wish to destroy us and prevent us and others from practicing our religion freely. They may mask their true intent under the guise of BDS, and other anti-Zionist rhetoric, but their intent is the persecution of the Jewish People. The festival of Purim teaches us that by standing together we will always triumph against modern day Hamans.
Purim is a joyous festival where we send our friends and colleagues Mishloach Manot, gifts of food, to enhance their celebrations of Purim. We are also required to give Matanot L’evyonim, gifts to the poor and impoverished, a fundamental and important value that all Alpha Omegans share. Finally, we are required to eat a festive meal and rejoice in the Purim spirit, something that Alpha Omegans and their families should be familiar with. Have fun – and Happy Purim!
