The Tel Aviv University School of Dental Medicine Reopens
It is with much pleasure that I announce that the Tel Aviv University
Maurice and Gabriela Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine, Founded by the Alpha
Omega Fraternity, has begun admission of new students for the first year
of studies. This step constitutes a final commitment by the University
to "reopen" the School. All that has happened followed the agreement by
the University that an objective committee be appointed with a mandate
to investigate the most pressing needs of the Dental School.
Much credit is due Mr. Gideon Sa'ar, Minister of Education, Professor
Shlomo Grossman, Head of VATAT (Planning and Budgeting committee for
Education), the University Administration, the Faculty of the School,
and of course to the members of the School's Dental Advisory Board. They
include Ralph Rothstein, Harold Presikel, Mervyn Druian, Andre Amiach ,
Ben Williamowsky, Howard Pranikoff, Gerald Niznick, Normal Mohl, Leo
Sreebny, Avi Chesner, and recently added members, Stan Bergman, Steve
Kess and Elisha Ben-Zur. Many ‘thanks' especially to the members of the
Alpha Omega International Fraternity for their belief in us and for
their continuous support through some trying times. Last but not least,
we recognize the students and the faculty of TAUSDM who firmly fought
for the cause they believed in all along.

Frater Ben Williamowsky at Capitol Hill New Conference
WASHINGTON, May 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Barbara Kennelly of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, and Dr. Ben Williamowsky of Silver Spring, Md., a Medicare recipient, held a news conference today to discuss benefits of and misconceptions about the Affordable Care Act and Medicare.
The participants highlighted a four-page brochure, Medicare and the New Health Care Law, What it Means for You, which was mailed by HHS this week to seniors. It outlines the benefits for Medicare recipients in the new health insurance reform law.
Below are Speaker Pelosi's opening remarks and selected quotes from each of the other participants:
Speaker Pelosi Opening Remarks:
Good afternoon. I know you are out there. [Laughter.] Good afternoon.
And a good afternoon it is when we have the Secretary of Health and Human Services with us at the Capitol--Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, a champion in promoting health care for all Americans as a right, not a privilege. I am here with Majority Leader Steny Hoyer. A special guest for all of us, Dr. Ben Williamowsky, a retired dentist and local senior. Steny will introduce him, but I want to say that my father gave him his diploma from dental school in 1948.

Alpha Omega
The Oldest International Dental Organization
Alpha Omega is the oldest international dental organization in the world and was founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1907 by a group of dental students originally to fight discrimination in dental schools. 2010 marks another milestone in our storied 103 year history as Alpha Omega welcomes our first female International President, Dr. Charlene Berkman of Bayside, New York. Dr. Berkman along with Dr. Marcy Schwartzman of Vancouver, Canada, who is the current International Secretary, were elected to the Alpha Omega Administrative Committee at the 2008 Annual Convention which was held in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Today, with our headquarters located in Denver, Colorado, Alpha Omega is primarily an educational and philanthropic organization. There are chapters and members in cities and dental schools in the United States, Canada, South America, Europe, Israel, South Africa and Australia/New Zealand. Alpha Omega represents about 6,000 members worldwide.
Alpha Omega is responsible for the formation of both dental schools in Israel; The Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine located in Jerusalem and the Tel Aviv University Maurice and Gabriela Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine. The Alpha Omega Foundation was also responsible for dispersing almost $250,000 this past year for projects in Israel and worldwide.
Lectures, seminars and study groups are promoted by local chapters for member continuing education and similar programs are available from chapters in all parts of the world. Alpha Omega recently was the co-sponsor of an educational project in Hungary. The goals of this program were to improve the community dental health awareness of dental educators in Hungary and to field-test home-care instructional classes for the public schools. This was similar to a project done several years ago in Morocco. Presidential Message>>>

Seattle Leadership Summit
Dear Fraters,
I have been home for 5 days now, and just finally able to sit down, reflect and communicate with you about a wonderful AO weekend in Seattle, on April 30-May 1.
Coming from Calgary, I flew to Seattle in the early morning of April 30. The hotel Bellevue was lovely. I arrived just in time to join the large crowd (about 100 people or more?) of dentists and their teams to listen to a full day presentation by Steve Anderson. Boy, I can never hear him too many times. What a terrific lecture, tons of stuff learned, and he also offered an incredibly generous offer to the AO members present as a gift to us all.
